By Grabthar’s hammer ….my car will be avenged

Hey Party People,

I just got my car back TODAY so after an extremely long week, you’ll get one more throwback before I finally get to see The Protégé. This week I decided to come from left field a bit and give praise to one of my favorite Action/Comedies (but leaning more towards the comedy) Galaxy Quest

I’m hoping by now you’ve all seen it. Tim Allen is basically William Shatner trying to still live in his Sci Fi television glory days, until aliens summon him and his “crew” for help thinking they are legitimate space cowboys. Needless to say, things are rocky in the best possible way. While this is a family movie, although not originally intended that way, there are still a lot of great action scenes mixed with a ton of laugh out loud sarcastic moments.

For action, there are big scary looking aliens trying to kill our heroes at almost every turn. There is a big rock creature, miner’s (not minors), and an angry pig thing attacking our star, Tim Allen. Plus, ship functionality intended for the sole purpose of destruction. While action isn’t necessarily non-stop, it is consistent and fun, especially in the climax of the film.

Speaking for the comedy, I really love when movie characters say realistic comments that viewers are already thinking. This movie is full of those moments, adding to the humor. For instance, Sigourney Weaver’s character says lines like “I have one job on this lousy ship, it’s stupid, but I’m going to do it.” Or “What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn’t have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?” She’s my favorite character in the movie (next to Guy), probably because I hope that if I were in her shoes, I’d say the exact same things.

So congrats, 1999, you crushed it. What are some of your favorite action comedies before the millennium?
